Why Coatings Matter

Your lens material sees, but the coating is what makes it liveable.

A prescription gets you sharp vision. A coating is what makes wearing that prescription comfortable, durable, and effortless — cutting glare on the road, keeping smudges off your screen time, or adapting to Nairobi sun the moment you step outside. Below, we break down each coating available at Omega Opticians: what it physically does to the lens, and who benefits most.

01 — Photochromic

One lens, clear indoors, tinted the second you step into the sun.

Photochromic lenses contain light-reactive molecules that automatically darken on exposure to UV light and fade back to clear indoors — no switching glasses, no clip-ons. Outdoors, they behave like a sunglass tint; indoors, they’re fully transparent for normal daily wear.

Because the reaction is triggered by UV rather than brightness alone, the transition happens reliably whether you’re walking out of the office at midday or driving between Nairobi and Nakuru.

02 — Blue Light Block

Cuts the harsh glow from screens, so your eyes stay relaxed longer.

Blue Light Block coating filters a portion of the high-energy blue-violet light emitted by phones, laptops, and LED lighting — the light most associated with digital eye strain, dryness, and disrupted sleep patterns after heavy screen use.

Instead of a raw, glaring white light hitting your eyes for hours, the coating takes the edge off, so screens read as softer and more comfortable, especially later in the day.

03 — Anti-Scratch

A hardened surface layer that shrugs off everyday wear and tear.

Anti-Scratch coating is a hard protective layer bonded to the lens surface, engineered to resist the fine scuffs and abrasions caused by dust, keys, pockets, cleaning cloths, and daily handling. It won’t make a lens indestructible, but it dramatically extends how long it stays clear and scratch-free.

Standard uncoated lenses, by contrast, visibly scuff within months of normal use — exactly what you see on the right of this comparison.

04 — Anti-Smudge

Fingerprints and oily residue glide off instead of sinking in.

This coating creates a smooth, low-friction surface that resists oils, fingerprints, and everyday grime from settling into the lens. Where a standard lens holds onto every touch and smear, an anti-smudge lens stays visibly cleaner for longer and wipes clean in seconds, without streaking.

It pairs naturally with hydrophobic treatment for a lens that resists both dry grime and wet residue.

05 — Hydrophobic

Water beads up and rolls away instead of clouding your view.

Hydrophobic coating repels water at a molecular level, causing rain, sweat, or splashes to form tight beads that slide off the lens rather than spreading into a blurry sheet. It also makes lenses far easier to dry and clean, since water (and the dirt it carries) doesn’t cling to the surface.

It’s the coating most noticeable the first rainy commute after you get it — suddenly you can actually see.

06 — Anti-Glare

Removes the reflections that stand between you and clear sight.

Anti-Glare (anti-reflective) coating eliminates the distracting reflections of light, headlights, and screens that normally bounce off the front and back of a lens. The result is more light passing through to your eye instead of scattering off the surface — sharper vision, especially at night.

It’s also the coating that makes your eyes visible behind the lens instead of hidden behind a wall of glare, which is why it’s standard on most premium prescriptions.
